Promotion Requirements
BELT RANK REQUIREMENTS TO SHODAN
The Dan grades refer to 1st degree black belt (Sho Dan) and above. Kyu Grades refer to the colored belts. The Dan grades rise upwards from 1st to indicate the higher skill, but in kyu grades, it is the reverse; thus 1st kyu immediately precedes 1st Dan. All promotion tests are formal tests, meaning clean, pressed white gis will be worn and all karate etiquette will be observed.
At the Toshikai dojo, everyone starts off as Hachikyu or 8th Kyu White Belt and the requirements for promotion listed below. Students will be asked to test by Sensei. This decision is based on a number of things including ability, knowledge, attendance, leadership and attitude. The kata for each rank will always be the same, however, Sensei reserves the right to make amendments to the other criteria at the time of examination. There is a $25 testing fee for every kyu testing except Shichikyu.
