Toshikai Co-Founder Shihan Tim Leonard (7th degree blackbelt)
Tim Leonard started his karate training in Manitoba in 1980. He opened his first karate club in 1985 at the North End YMCA in Winnipeg and then a second club in a Winnipeg community centre.
Sensei Rod Berek (4th degree blackbelt)
Rod has been practicing karate since November 2005, taking it up at the tender age of 40. He gained his first degree black belt in May 2010 and his 4th degree black belt in May 2022. He has had a chance to train with many masters in several different styles and with several different weapons.
For his day job, Rod designs vehicle electronics for Armoured Fighting Vehicles. Besides karate, he tries to find time to play one of his guitars. He also used to practice annoying his wife, but he stopped, as one does not need to practice after they have attained perfection.
Toshikai Co-Founder Sensei Deb Fuchek (3rd degree blackbelt)
Deb Fuchek began her study of martial arts at the very young age of six. From 1974-1977, she practised judo, achieving a blue belt and winning an eventual bronze medal at the Junior Olympics in Judo in Toronto in 1977.
